ESL Records has announced their first release of the year – Karimba from Novalima. Karimba takes Novalima’s music to new heights, introducing both new sounds and traditional rhythms like the Panalivio, Zamacueca, Ingá and Tondero, while maintaining their distinctive Afro and dub sound. Karimba is Novalima's fourth record, and it has solidified the band's reputation as a producer of world music that's both accessible and danceable. The album incorporates African-inspired percussion that blends seamlessly with modern electronic beats and a wealth of historical influences.
Though Novalima was originally started by four Peruvian musicians living in all four corners of the world (Barcelona, Hong Kong, London, and Lima), this experimental music group's membership spans much wider than that. Their sound and goal are much too broad to be thought of in a traditional "credits list" sense. Their reputation at home in Lima has allowed them to work with the top traditional musicians in the city, inviting vocalists Pepe Vasquez, Rosita Guzman, and Sofia Buitron as well as guitarists Roberto Arguedas and Felix Casaverde (former guitarist for Chabuca Granda), in addition to members of the live band. From the driving rhythms and furious percussion of tracks like “Mamaye” and “Luna Ciega” to more pensive tangents like “Revolucion” and “Malivio Son” Novalima’s Karimba is a joyous whirlwind of sound and song.
Though the world is generally familiar with several Afro-Latino musical styles, meaning music created by the mutual influence of African, Spanish, and indigenous cultures, such as Afro-Cuban (salsa, son) or Afro-Brazilian (samba, bossa nova), Afro-Peruvian music has been much overlooked by world music audiences.
